“Alchemy of Remanants”

Stoneware cone 6 reduction and oxidation fired with recycled, reclaimed, local clay and wood ash glazes-on wood panel
Year:2025

This project encourages the potential of sustainable ceramic practices, aiming to significantly minimize the art form's environmental footprint. While ceramics historically embraced local materials and sustainable techniques, the industry's shift towards commercialization has often sidelined these traditions and contributed to environmental degradation. My work reclaims the essence of sustainable ceramics by repurposing studio waste and utilizing locally sourced clay. This approach not only drastically reduces waste but also fosters a deeper connection to the natural materials and their invaluable resources. The exhibition featured 90 individual mushroom sculptures, crafted entirely from recycled glazes, wood ash, and local clay. Additionally, smaller mandala pieces are created from similar recycled and reclaimed glazes. These works collectively explore themes of  human connection, and the cyclical nature of life. By blending aesthetic appeal with environmental consciousness, this project seeks to inspire viewers and actively promote sustainable practices within the art world. It also aims to challenge the perception of ceramics as an elitist pursuit, instead highlighting the potential for accessible and eco-friendly artistic methods. Through this body of work, I aspire to contribute to a broader and more impactful conversation about sustainability in art and beyond.
